This weekend Lillian has been doing rudimentary arithmetic.
“Lillian, how many rosellas are there?”
“If one flies away, how many are there?”
“If there are two kangaroos, and another two come along, how many are there?”
Of course she doesn’t always get it right.
Interestingly, she appears to be doing it by understanding about the numerical relations themselves – or perhaps more simply, just imagining and counting – as opposed to providing learned-by-rote answers.
